Dr. Yasir Mohamud is an early career investigator at University of British Columbia (UBC) and Centre for Heart Lung Innovation Providence Research Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital.
His primary research focuses on virology, cell and molecular biology, and translational virology research with interest in viral heart failure.
He began his academic journey at the University of Ottawa, obtaining his B.Sc. in Biochemistry in 2012. He then advanced his studies with an M.Sc. at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (CHEORI), examining the molecular aspects of beta cell dysfunction in diabetes pathogenesis. Dr. Mohamud pursued his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, investigating the mechanisms of viral-induced diseases, including myocarditis and neurodegeneration.
His research was recognized with competitive awards such as the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology in 2014, the UBC 4-Year Doctoral Fellowship, and the ALS-Canada/Brain Canada Doctoral Fellowship from 2017 to 2021.
His research is supported by funding agencies such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, NSERC, CIHR, and ALS-Canada. During his postdoctoral studies at UBC, Dr. Mohamud secured the prestigious Michael Smith for Health Research BC/Centre for Heart Lung Innovation/St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship (2022-2025) and the inaugural CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award (2023-2029).
